in a former life i was involved in Economic Development marketing and did some work for Oak Ridge National Laboratory materials division. We’ve had graphene tech and much more way back in the 90s, but my understanding is there’s a bottleneck from lab bench to market. You hear about this all the time in exotic materials sciences, that USG has all these wonders but they get contacted out privately and then disappear into some vault at Lockheed.

this is all just incredibly sad.

You might like Wolf's "Europe and the People Without History". Doesn't just cover the rise of Europe but the history and culture of the people we conquered.

Note that the Manchu were awful and very warlike. They weren't the "good" guys, they engaged in mass conquest of their own and were infamous for their massacres and tortures. They just ran into someone tougher than them. (Which isn't to justify what the West did.)
