You might like Wolf's "Europe and the People Without History". Doesn't just cover the rise of Europe but the history and culture of the people we conquered.

Note that the Manchu were awful and very warlike. They weren't the "good" guys, they engaged in mass conquest of their own and were infamous for their massacres and tortures. They just ran into someone tougher than them. (Which isn't to justify what the West did.)

And how has all of this advancement in China taken place? The Bank of China, a PUBLIC UTILITY! Is there any of this in the United States? YES! The Bank of North Dekota. Anyone interested, look into the work by Ellen Brown as she'll demonstrate what a PUBLIC UTILITY can actually do for, well, the general PUBLIC.

Note: the recent recession here in AMERICA (2009-2010 and beyond- horrible job by Obama and his Democratic party) didn't take place in North Dekota, and why? The PUBLIC UTILITY as their economy continued to advance, and why? The Bank of North Dekota was able to fund community banks which funded economic projects throughout the state. STUPID AMERICANS!

I'm experimenting with putting follow-on links in comments — not sure how many people it reaches. Here's the first on the China tech front:

Arnaud Bertrand has been writing on X for quite a while about how China leads in high tech. He quotes a 2024 Harvard Business Review how "China now leads the US "in 53 out of 64 critical technological fields" and "Chinese scientists now lead the world in producing high-impact papers"." https://x.com/RnaudBertrand/status/1828916882583499168 US deporting Chinese scientsts will only accelerate that advantage.

I strongly believe that our brightest youth should be contemplating a one-way ticket to university and career in China. Although China is going to get whacked by climate change, in the interim these students will be pursuing threshold research in the world's finest facilities.

in a former life i was involved in Economic Development marketing and did some work for Oak Ridge National Laboratory materials division. We’ve had graphene tech and much more way back in the 90s, but my understanding is there’s a bottleneck from lab bench to market. You hear about this all the time in exotic materials sciences, that USG has all these wonders but they get contacted out privately and then disappear into some vault at Lockheed.

this is all just incredibly sad.
