Don't look for an electoral solution anytime soon. Ken Martin, the new head of the DNC, already has declared there are "good" billionaires who are Democrats and share "our values." Clearly he hasn't noticed that the billionaires toadying up to Trump used to do the same to Obama. Also Roger Lau, who was named Executive Director of the DNC, used to be the campaign manager for Elizabeth Warren's spoiler 2020 Presidential campaign which was singlehandedly propped up by Karla Jurvetson. Also Lau was directing Harris' Victory fund, so if you're looking to burning through billions of dollars quickly and getting zero results he's your man.
Besides the Democratic has been coasting on the accomplishments of long dead pols for decades now. Which do they fight harder for the minimum wage or keeping the federal deduction for state and local taxes for their wealthy donors living in higher taxing blue states?
it’s a translation thing and also dependent on the author who used it. they’re all equally valid and correct in the college of arts and sciences 😉 someone in literature would run into many different variations, esp in Russian lit.
i came across it in ancient lit and then ancient phil — mostly greek stuff which naturally tend toward ‘reason.’
Capitalism is the product of massive human overpopulation and the break away from the ecologically balanced, self-sustaining egalitarian lifeways of our migratory Hunter-Gatherer ancestral clans/bands. We are now 3,000 times more numerous than they were just a few thousand years ago. What could go wrong? Everything?
Remember "Washington Week in Review" when the consensus of opinion among the seated pundits was that Alan Greenspan had eliminated the business cycle? That was the b.s. of the 90's which let Clinton get away with putting Glass-Steagall in the circular file. Reagan was not 'that' stupid. That action undertaken by Clinton was the first overt clue that the Democrats too had made the ultra-wealthy their chief constituent.
Thomas, your three bullet point list of the malign effect the wealthy exact on our society is short and sweet.
Being of an age, my grandparents spent their early adult years in the Great Depression and my parents were small children at that time. During some holiday family dinners the topic of the depression would come up, the adults at the table would look horrified and the subject would change. Man, why did I not ask for detail of that time? Those are observations we could all benefit from.
i was adopted by my grandparents and The Depression shaped my upbringing. among other skills, my mother taught me how to charm jetty fishermen out of a fish for dinner. i haven’t needed to employ that…yet 😝…as an adult but it’s in my back pocket.
I wanted to riff on the libertarian favorite of "teach a man to fish ..." but after checking how much of my electrical power is Canadian in origin, time is not one of my luxuries.
Not to suggest that the sophrosyne of US plutocrats in the 50s was voluntary or that it represented wisdom. They were disciplined by political power.
Exactly, Tom.

the latin is literally “whom the gods would destroy, first they deprive reason,” which is why my handle is “crisis of reason” on xwitter.
my masters thesis was “a fully postmodern society will ruled by marketing and propaganda.” and here we are.
I thought it was whom the Gods would destroy first they make mad
Maybe it's a matter of translation
Longfellow used the usual formulation ("they first make mad") of a previous writer. Brook's right; the concept goes back to the Greeks.

i can so relate.

Thanks for the humor! ☺
