Our word terrorism comes directly from an 18th century French word "terrorisme", specifically meaning state violence and murders perpetrated against perceived opponents - ordinary French citizens - during the Terror (following the Revolution). Have we come full circle?

This post closes with a questions that have haunted this aging brain of mine for a long period of time. We are violent, extremely violent. And we are getting worse. Look at football taking over from baseball as our favorite sport.

For a people putatively existing in a stable democracy, why the plethora of guns and ammunition of which a minority are suitable for hunting? Well at least some are prepared for the Sub Saharan style of feuding warlords that might take over regions of our country.

I can't answer these questions of why we are so damn evil. But I can affirm that evil we are.

I do think that eschewing the sordid facts of our history and embellishing our exceptionalism has not helped matters. We need to own the violence.
