I am not religious. I have long time friends, one is a devout Roman Catholic that can attest to my lack of religious fibre.
But what harm comes from the current Pope praying for our salvation? Admittedly, if the greater number of us think, "Well that's solved!", then that is a great harm. So, consider the positive impact of a praying Pope. The cry of "Why aren't we?" for every decent public policy that this Pope has designated. Faith builds community. We have plenty to pray for: chiefly the power to demand.

Wilkerson is 81 years old and came of age in a time when he could still make a choice to land his Cayuse helicopter to protect civilians from American atrocities, before Ayn Rand, Milton Freidman, and Ronald Reagan replaced disillusionment with a culture defined by selfishness and nihilism. Unfortunately, bullying and greed are very simple to justify when an unprecedented global population explosion during Wilkerson’s lifetime is destroying the biosphere and creating scarcity for everyone. He suffers, as I do, from empathy for his fellow human beings and despair at the impossibility of negotiating with sociopaths because he can remember when the world was a different place.
The United States is not committing suicide at all. It is simply dropping any remaining pretense of being anything other than an empire ruled by naked force, now that it no longer needs to pretend otherwise.
Think of it like a pimp that has the poor runaway girl in a hotel far from home, no money, no phone, no longer any need to keep up the act of being a nice guy just trying to help out and he can be something much more sinister.
Those who like historical examples can look to the end of the Roman Republic.
