From the article: "Feeling safe in the world — important now more than ever. With what’s here and whatever’s to come, the task is always the same: Live as well as you can. Be courageous. Resilient. Loving. Forgive and be strong. Always remain in charge of what you control. It’s all that anyone has, even in excellent times." In my work as a Crossing Guard at a local elementary school I must always (today's traffic is complete madness) do my job as well as I can by being resilient (ready to face the worst possible outcome for myself-death!). Loving the children I interact with isn't hard to do as just looking at their faces brings such joy. Forgiveness? Daily I must, if I wish to continue this job of being a Crossing Guard, forgive those parents who refuse to use the crosswalk while endangering their children as every time I see them crossing where they shouldn't (I have signs stating "For Safety please use Crosswalk" with a bright YELLOW ARROW pointing to the crosswalk!) at little part of me dies! Being strong? Standing tall in the cold, the rain, triple digit heat, and rarely, snowfall (not much snowfall here in southern California but sometimes, and yes, I have to worry about the children playing in the rain and the snow) no matter the elements, we do our jobs the best we can! Being in control? A must as I use an Iron Fist with a Velvet Glove at all times. My ability to remain in control at all times ensures the safety of the children I cross daily, and for this, I receive praise and thanks from the parents who recognize my efforts in keeping their precious children safe two times a day, coming and going!
